Sitting down with the writers of NBC’s hit TV show “This Is Us” was the most exciting moment of my LA press visit! Unless you’ve been living under a rock… you would know this show is one of the most watched, talked about and most importantly… FELT in the nation! I have met most of the talented cast which gave me an outer body experience… but to attend this special roundtable with the creative minds (writers) behind the scene was simply INCREDIBLE!
Did you know there’s a total of 10 writers who take us through all the tears, sadness and joy each week? Not only do provide the script… they diligently plan and bring in each cast member to discuss how their character will evolve so they know whats coming (as a big picture). I’m STILL on cloud nine as I was able to chat with 3 of the brilliant ones… Kay Oyegun, Shuckree Tilghman and Elizabeth Berger.
Kay: Nigerian-American (born in LA) writer who also writes for Queen Sugar and is set to co-write the Angela Davis biopic! She also wrote the episode that aired last Tuesday…This Big, Amazing, Beautiful Life
Shuckree: Worked as an editor on Dog the Bounty Hunter and received an M.F.A. in Screenwriting at Columbia University! He also wrote for The Vampire Diaries.
Elizabeth: Along with college & dear friend Isaac Aptaker… executive producers/co-showrunners of the show! Her father was the head writer of Sesame Street.
Ok… how do you handle sitting in front of the folks who are responsible for your favorite television series?!?! I had so many burning thoughts but narrowed it down to one simple question:
Where do you draw your stories from?
THIS IS what they had to say! Watch my little video with the extra “small” distractions in the clip. LOL, it was a very relaxed/informal environment:
I was so fascinated with this team… I had to know if they were ever harassed on the street from “die hard” fans who want to take the show in different directions. LOL 😂
Kay: **chuckling** “We’re fine. We had the Volture article… when we revealed that Kate was pregnant.. we get more pitches from publications. SO it’s like the publications that literally tell us where we should go with stories and how we should tell those stories… which we laugh at. But there was this Volture article that detailed aggressively what would happen with her pregnacy. Then after we revealed the story line… they actually printed a retraction apologizing. They we like you zigged when we thought you were going to zag!”
Oh my goodness what an honor! Sending a huge thanks to NBC for the opportunity!
As mentioned… several cast members from the show have caught my lens. Check out my special collage of talent:
The Pearson family’s generational story unfolds in this emotional drama. In moments of love, joy, triumph and heartbreak, revelations emerge from parents Jack and Rebecca’s past, while triplets Kate, Randall and Kevin discover deeper meaning in their present day lives. Successful businessman and father Randall searches for information about his biological parents. Kate finds love and self-acceptance while battling obesity. Kevin pursues a more meaningful career, which brings some difficult choices.
Be sure to watch “THE WEDDING” episode tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT as the Pearsons come together to celebrate Kate and Toby’s wedding.
